Frequently Asked Questions

Food distributors connect suppliers and manufacturers of food products to the marketplace, whether it be retail (e.g. grocery stores, convenience stores or distribution centers) or food service (restaurants, cafes, delis and more). In order to manage this critical supply chain function, food distributors must typically manage warehousing, transportation and administrative functions such as order-processing, inventory management and billing.

There are different models of food distribution, with a large percentage of distributors purchasing goods and reselling with mark-ups of 5% up to 40% over wholesale cost. Mar Pacific offers a few different cost structures depending on your needs and stage of brand development, including the aforementioned reseller format and a 3PL distribution model (distribution as a service). At its most basic description, food distribution includes the receiving of goods, management of inventory levels (procurement functions), food grade storage, order fulfillment and transportation (delivery) service combined with administrative tasks required to ensure that food lot traceability and purchasing/billing functions are all executed with timeliness and accuracy. Accuracy of inventory allocation and depletion are also critical to ensuring fulfillment by FIFO or Expiration, which in turn minimize risk of inventory shrinkage and food waste.
A key drop or dark drop delivery is a delivery made at night while a given facility is closed. For example, Mar Pacific manages cafe distribution services through a key drop / dark drop model, ensuring that product is delivered when the store is closed and traffic is minimal, enabling improved customer service at the cafe (i.e. not having to receive goods while customers are in the store), as well as a higher level of logistic efficiency as well as improved customer service at each cafe.
Tri-Temp Distribution refers to dry, chilled and frozen goods being transferred on a single order delivery. This requires specialty equipment, such as refrigerated trucks with bulkheads or multiple compartments to support chilled or frozen temperature requirements.
SQF stands for “Safe Quality Food” and is one of the accepted food safety standards in compliance with the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). SQF is a comprehensive certification system addressing food and ingredient manufacturing, as well as storage, distribution, transportation and logistics. SQF certified organizations undergo annual 3rd party audits to ensure acceptable levels of compliance. Mar Pacific is proud to have achieve a 2023 audit score of 98/100, with audit scores that have never been less than 95/100.
